"What most people don't know is that for a multiday trek, camels are sent a day or more in advance so you get more bang for your buck instead of riding through semi-arid shrubs, therefore a better experience for customers..."

CARAVAN OASIS TREK
2 night / 3 day trek
Available Mid-September through Mid-May
Fitness level - Medium

We have fallen into the place where everything is music. The strumming and the flute notes rise into the atmosphere, and if the whole world's harp should burn up, there will still be hidden instruments playing, playing ..... Stop the words now. Open the window in the center of your chest, and let the spirits fly in and out! -  Rumi

On this trek, you will drive a short distance to the south of Zaafane to meet with the camels and cameleers and begin your trek.  Choose to walk or ride ‘your camel' through the ever changing landscape. As you travel by foot or camel, life slows down as you allow yourself to live in the moment.

In the afternoon you will arrive at an abandoned Bedouin village in the desert (Ommi Henda, named for a female Marabout) which includes a picturesque mosque nearly buried in the sand, a Bedouin cemetery and two Marabouts. One of these two Marabouts was for women Sufis and one for men.

Marabout means "saint" and refers to Sufi Muslim teachers associated with the spiritual tradition called a Tariqah ("way"/ "path"). A Marabout may also refer to a tomb (as in this case) of a respected saint, and these special places have become sacred places of spiritual reflection.

We will camp beside this crumbling village surrounded by beautiful white sand dunes and small clusters of palm trees.

A big part of what makes a camel trek unique is the experience of the Bedouin life, traveling as the nomads do, following the rhythm of the dunes and camels. And especially, in the evenings sitting around the campfire while your delicious meal is being prepared for you. And finally, the magic of the evenings under the blanket of stars, listening to traditional music or dancing by the firelight. (Or bring your own musical instrument and have a cultural exchange!)

The second night you will camp in an area with beautiful sand dunes.

... and as the orange sun goes down in the vast desert sky -  surrounded by  music, desert and sky, you will understand the magic of nights in the Sahara.

At some point on the trek you will stop at a large dune. You will climb the dune to the top of the bluff to a stunning view of the distant dunes and where there is a miniature Marabout, built by an unknown Sufi for meditation and prayer.

We will begin our return to Douz along with your memories and some new friends.

Have you ever wondered what it was like to live in a Bedouin camp? Add a day on to your trek, and spend it immersed in the experience of a Bedouin camp:

If you choose this option, on the afternoon of the third day of your trek, you will arrive at a traditional Bedouin camp, being welcomed warmly by the Bedouin families. Participate in the Bedouin camp life as much or as little as you like, while the sheep, goats and chickens roam and the Bedouins go about their daily life.

As the sun sets,  dinner will be prepared for you by one of the family members. In the evening around the campfire, enjoy the music of the Bedouins and dance or just soak up being part of this community.
